girl in red - I'll Call You Mine (official video)

Today girl in red - the project of alternative pop mastermind Marie Ulven - is sharing the Jared Hogan-directed music video for her latest single “I’ll Call You Mine,” from her critically acclaimed debut album if i could make it go quiet.

girl in red is hot off the stage from performing at MTV EMA's in Budapest, Hungary, alongside Ed Sheeran, Kim Petras, Yungblud, Imagine Dragons, Griff & more... Ulven delivered a high energy version of her hit single “Serotonin.” girl in red was nominated for 2 awards, not bad for an artist on her debut album.

With over 70k tickets already sold globally and sold out tours around the world for 2022, girl in red is ready to cement her place as one of alternative pop’s breakthrough voices. girl in red will be returning the US in December for a handful of performances before embarking on her biggest ever headlining US tour in March 2022, she will be joined by special guest Holly Humberstone. Tickets for that tour are selling fast.

if i could make it go quiet continues to make waves around the world with critical acclaim from fans and critics alike. Ulven has been revered by the likes of Taylor Swift, Camilla Cabello and more. Already amassing 1.6 billion career streams, in the US “Serotonin” hit #2 on the Alternative radio charts and saw her perform on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night With Seth Meyers.

Watch the New Video Here

Praise for if i could make it go quiet:

"Ulven has carved out a place for herself in indie rock by appealing to her listeners’ insecurities and yearnings. Her Girl in Red persona — think Billie Eilish’s self-aware bluster, mixed with a healthy splash of early ‘00s college rock — grapples in equal turns with mental health and sometimes unrequited lust." - Rolling Stone

"If the open-hearted, FINNEAS co-produced lead single “serotonin” is any indication, expect the LP to contain more memorable pop-rock mutations and piano balladry." - Pitchfork

"You Stupid Bitch" lands like lighting from its very first beat, letting listeners know that this is a different Girl in Red. The plugged-in, rocked-out production perfectly matches Marie Ulven's furious energy, as she delivers a blistering wake-up call to the girl she can't get over..."
- Billboard

"The result is a head-turning alt-pop banger that juxtaposes sped-up beats with jarring examples of Ulven’s intrusive thoughts...I hesitate to describe a song about “running low on serotonin” as anthemic, but I’ll be real with you. It’s March 2021; I’ve been “capitulating / Crying like a fucking baby” on and off for the past year. If life in a pandemic had a soundtrack, it would surely feature this vulnerable cut." - MTV on “Serotonin”

"Deserve" by Animalweapon - Official Lyric Video

ANIMAL WEAPONS
Releases Shimmering, Lo-Fi
New Single "Deserve"

New Album Out 2022 via Polychromatic

NOVEMBER 19, 2021 (Raleigh, NC) -- Bedroom Synthwave / Electronic artist ANIMALWEAPON (née Patrick Cortes) has finally returned with his latest single "Deserve" via Polychromatic Records. Streamable now on Spotify and Apple Music, the track tackles relatable mental health issues of anxiety and depression. Says Cortes, "'It's about realizing that you don’t deserve to let depression or trauma or anxiety ruin your life, which is something I’ve known I’ve been doing for a very long time, brought into even sharper relief when I recently started going back to therapy with a firmer commitment."

The lowkey, shimmering track starts off with simple synth and kickdrums that allow Cortes' vocals to take the spotlight as he reflects on anxiety and self-sabotage. Culminating in a pastoral soundscape of percussion, synths, and a choir of backing vocoders that ebb into a textural catharsis, Cortes drives home the narrative of the song; that he deserves happiness; not to be held back by trauma and depression.

The track is a self-realization of sorts, allowing him to examine his own impulses and actions. He explains, "It’s about coming to terms with the idea of 'Hey, what if I didn’t self-sabotage all the time? At what point have I had enough? What if I just allowed myself to believe that I deserve to be happy?'”

Written, recorded, and set to a lyric video created by  Polychromatic’s Scot Dunlap, “Deserve” was  mixed by Winston-Salem, NC’s Travis Dark and mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Vlado Meller. Meller’s resume touts  albums mastered for an astonishing range of artists, including Kanye  West, Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash, and Phantogram - the last of whom Cortes  routinely cites as one of his major influences. Says Cortes, “Voices is one of my favorite albums, and Scot and I had this long-shot goal of getting Vlado to master this song and we were beyond excited when he agreed."

"Deserve" is the follow up to last year's critically-hailed "Summer's Over" which received acclaim and attention from BlackBook ("It strikes the emotional zeitgeist chord so very perfectly, with a Satie-like piano intro giving way to languid beats, and then a somber but opulent sweep of synthesized strings taking it to soaring heights of sonic poignancy"), V13 ("Intimate, evocative, and thought-provoking"), and Play Too Much ("A relaxing, mystical track), among others, and also opened the door to a live performance on SPIN's Twitch channel.

In addition to his work with Animalweapon, Cortes won a 2017 Webby Award for Best Sound Design/Original Music Score for his work on the hit podcast Undisclosed, which was the follow-up to the #1 iTunes media phenomenon Serial.  The true crime mystery Undisclosed got nods from NPR, Rolling Stone and The Washington Post. Emmy winner Jon Cryer joined the Undisclosed team for Season Two. He also composted the theme song for iHeartMedia's The Hidden Djinn which reached the Top 20 on the iTunes History podcast chart

"Deserve" by Animalweapon is out now via Polychromatic Records.

Sunday - Pieta Brown & JT Bates (ft. CARM) (Official Video)

Beloved singer/songwriter Pieta Brown has teamed up with acclaimed percussionist/producer JT Bates (Bonny Light Horseman, Big Red Machine, Taylor Swift) for two new singles to be released through Righteous Babe Records. Today they shared the second track titled “Sunday” featuring additional instrumentation by CJ Camerieri (Carm, yMusic, Bon Iver, Paul Simon) along with a video by actor/dancer/model Brandise Danesewich.

Watch the video for “Sunday” HERE

“We composed ‘Sunday’ out of many layers of fragments, starting with my guitar fragment and a few ambient recording fragments I had made and sent to JT,” said Pieta. “At some point in the back and forth I caught a spark and sang to the instrumental piece we had started forming. I sang without thinking and my first response stuck to the track. I reckon survival has always been a universal theme, but it's feeling like it’s everywhere right now...for everyone. I was surprised by what I sang, but as soon as I had the vocals I kept hearing/imagining a horn section and so JT reached out to CJ. CJ's arrangements feel perfect: open, poignant, and a bit playful. Jeremy Ylvisaker and Chris Bates brought even more music to the track. The song is called ‘Sunday’ because I recorded the acoustic guitar fragment on a Sunday, and it was this fragment that JT first responded to out of the pile of noise I sent him. We send this song out to all survivors! With love!”

“I’ve long been a fan of Pieta Brown’s songwriting and musicianship so I was over the moon when JT Bates asked me to be a part of this song,” said CJ. “I immediately latched onto these beautiful melodic fragments that JT played on the keyboard and the brass arrangement came quickly to me thereafter. I’m really honored to be a part of this incredibly unique and gorgeous track.”

“Bringing Carm's brass voice into the track really took ‘Sunday’ to a new and inspirational level,” continued Bates. “Once we had that in place, it became clear how to have Chris Bates and Jeremy Ylvisaker complete the whole sound. I'm very proud of this music and excited to share it.”

“Sunday” follows the release of first single “Is / Was,” a slow-burning experimental ballad anchored by Brown’s stirring guitars and dreamy vocals and Bates’ innovative beats and ethereal instrumentation.

Hailed as a “self-styled poetess, folk goddess, and country waif” by the BBC, Brown first came to international prominence with the release of her self-titled debut in 2002. Over the course of the ensuing two decades, she’s gone on to release another seven critically acclaimed records, prompting NPR to applaud her “moody, ethereal” songwriting, and The New York Times to praise her “sweet, smokey voice.” She has garnered praise and support from a wide array of peers and mentors, including legendary producer Don Was, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Ani DiFranco, and Mark Knopfler. She’s also toured the US and Europe extensively, as well as shared the stage with artists such as John Prine, Brandi Carlile, Emmylous Harris, JJ Cale, Neko Case, Richard Thompson, Mavis Staples, and Iris Dement.

For her most recent full-length album Freeway, Brown enlisted producer S. Carey and recorded all 11 tracks over the course of just three days at Justin Vernon’s April Base Studios. The results earned widespread critical acclaim from NPR Music, Stereogum, Billboard, Flood Magazine, Paste, American Songwriter, Folk Alley, and Relix Magazine among others. She followed that shortly after with the bold and experimental single “Follow You” as well as an EP/digital triptych collaboration recorded at Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner’s HIVER Festival called We Are Not Machines featuring Ani DiFranco, S. Carey, Brian Joseph, and more.

Joshua Crumbly - Kolkata (Official Music Video)

Bassist, producer, and songwriter Joshua Crumbly released the Giraffe Studios-directed video for his song “Kolkata.” The track is off of Crumbly’s recently released full-length ForEver — guests on the album include Shahzad Ismaily, Sam Gendel, Jay Bellerose, and more. So far, ForEver has been praised by NPR Music, Bandcamp, Cool Hunting, Hypebeast, Popmatters, No Treble, WBGO, MXDWN, Under The Radar, and NYS Music, who said “Crumbly’s gift lies in emotionally evocative and masterful bass guitar.” ForEver is available now digitally and on vinyl at Bandcamp.

“The original version of this song came to me whilst in Kolkata, India visiting family,” Crumbly says. “I had a moment of stillness looking out the window taking in everything. It was such a beautiful moment that I can’t even quite explain but I’m so grateful to have experienced it. The theme of this song came to me and I documented it right away as if it were a sonic journal entry.”

Joshua is genre-blurring artist and sought after bassist who’s recorded and toured
with artists like Kamasi Washington, Leon Bridges, Terence Blanchard, and Bob Dylan, performing in Dylan’s 2021 concert film Shadow Kingdom. Crumbly’s 2020 debut album Rise was met with praise from Hypebeast, Indieshuffle, Jazziz, WBGO, Earmilk, No Treble, Exclaim!, Glide, Ones to Watch, and The FADER, who said Rise featured “explosions of synths mixed with a driving drum pattern that has the dusty texture of a jazz lounge.” Though centred around the bass guitar, ForEver uses additional instrumentation with subtlety and grace.

Joshua made his musical debut aged 10, playing alongside his saxophonist father. A gifted performer, even as a pre-teen, he enjoyed mentorships with renowned bass players Reggie Hamilton (Whitney Houston, Seal) and Al McKibbon (Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins) before moving from LA to New York to attend the prestigious Juilliard music school. After years of honing his musicality alongside seminal players, Joshua finally embarked on recording his own solo pieces, beginning with 2020’s Rise. The starting place of ForEver quickly followed, beginning with encouraging words from friend and collaborator Shahzad Ismaily.

“ForEver began with an out of the blue call from Shahzad,” Joshua explains “He told me that I needed to record a solo bass album. It started out as such, then I added some other instruments. It branched out even further when I reached out to a few friends, whose voice I was strongly hearing on particular songs. I’m grateful they were down to be a part of the record.”

figureight records is a creative project led by Shahzad Ismaily. The label has to date released records by múm founding member Gyda Valtysdottir, NYC super-producer Randall Dunn, Jon Hopkins and Brian Eno collaborator Leo Abrahams, Spotify chart-topping indie artist Toth, and more.

Tangerine Records To Release Double Vinyl Collection
True Genius: Sides of Ray On November 19th

Download hi-res album art

November 15, 2021: Tangerine Records has announced True Genius: Sides of Ray, a double vinyl disc collection to be released on November 19th. The collection illustrates Charles’ many musical “sides” by focusing each album side on the genre categories he visited most: soul, jazz & blues, country, and pop. True Genius: Sides of Ray is currently available for pre-order here.

Ray’s unique mastery of music allowed him to continue to explore all forms of music, freely floating between jazz, blues, pop, rock, soul and country while continuing to combine them in new, unprecedented ways. His dramatic expansion of the boundaries of country music was celebrated in August 2021, when he was officially inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

True Genius: Sides of Ray follows the September 2021 release of True Genius, a newly remastered, limited edition CD set featuring 90 of the greatest songs from his legendary career and all of Ray’s biggest hits. The collection was met with wide acclaim in publications including Rolling Stone, American Songwriter, Goldmine, and more. True Genius is currently available for purchase here.

Ray Charles’s recordings are major landmarks in American culture. By blending country and roots with other popular sounds, this visionary singer, songwriter, pianist and composer brought his expansive musical vision to a worldwide audience. Charles’ albums, released during the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, broke down both racial and genre barriers. The incredible crossover success of Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, Volumes 1 & 2 led Willie Nelson to remark, “Ray Charles did more for country music than any other artist.” Ray continued to do something no other artist had done before or since, conquering all genres of music, from gospel and R&B to soul, country, jazz, blues, and pop, which led Frank Sinatra to dub Ray Charles, the only “True Genius” in music.

Ray further helped bring Americans together with his rendition of “America the Beautiful,” and he remains the only artist in history to create and define a national anthem.  Charles was also one of the first recording artists to have ownership of his masters as well as complete creative freedom.

Charles’ staggering achievements over a 58-year career include 17 GRAMMY Awards, induction into both the Rock and Roll and Country Hall of Fame, a Lifetime Achievement and the President’s Merit Award, the Presidential Medal for the Arts, France’s Legion of Honor, the Kennedy Center Honors, the NAACP Image Awards’ “Hall of Fame Award,” and numerous other music Halls of Fame, including those for Jazz and Rhythm & Blues, all testament to his enormous influence. In 2019, he was honored by the Grand Ole Opry with An Opry Salute to Ray Charles, which was broadcast across PBS stations.

One of the greatest artists of all time, Charles successfully mastered and forever changed the blues, jazz, gospel, rock, pop, and country music landscapes. He teamed up with the best of the best in each stylistic genre, including B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls, Hank Williams Jr, Willie Nelson, Stevie Wonder, and countless others. As he described himself. “I’m not a country singer. I’m a singer who sings country songs. I’m not a blues singer, but I can sing the blues. I’m not really a crooner, but I can sing love songs. I’m not a specialist, but I’m a pretty good utility man. I can play first base, second base, shortstop. I can catch and maybe even pitch a little.”

Ray Charles was more than just the Genius of Soul; he was the Genius of Music.

Courtney Barnett - If I Don't Hear From You Tonight [Official Video]

COURTNEY BARNETT
UNVEILS NEW VIDEO FOR
“IF I DON’T HEAR FROM YOU TONIGHT”

THINGS TAKE TIME, TAKE TIME OUT NOW

Already garlanded by critics as one of the standout releases of the year, Things Take Time, Take Time, the third studio album by Courtney Barnett, signals an exciting new chapter for the indie rock superstar, consolidating her place in the storied lineage of influential singer-songwriters, even as it polishes and refines her knack for a killer melody and unique turn of phrase like never before.

At the heart of Things Take Time, Take Time, is a love song — one of Courtney’s first. “If I Don’t Hear From You Tonight” is effervescently, unabashedly, cheekily love-drunk, soaring and remarkably high-stakes in comparison to the rest of the record: “If loving you’s a crime, then gimme those front page headlines,” Courtney sings, aware of the cliche and crushing too hard to care.

WATCH “IF I DON’T HEAR FROM YOU TONIGHT” HERE:
Courtney Barnett - If I Don't Hear From You Tonight [Official Video]

In Courtney’s words - “I think my stance in the past was like, ‘There's so many love songs and they don't mean anything,’ but there's something really special about zooming in on a moment and capturing it. “‘If I Don’t Hear From You Tonight’ comes from the state of where my head was at — trying to communicate honestly instead of keeping [my feelings] guarded.”

“If I Don’t Hear From You Night” is a profound and totally joyous song, one about being in love, but also about being in love with the feeling of being in love. The fuss free but knowing, winking video depicts Courtney performing the track in the magical surrounds of Joshua Tree, accompanied by album co-producer and drummer Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint, Kurt Vile) and acclaimed Welsh songwriter Cate Le Bon, who performed bass on the song.

Allen Stone - Bed I Made ft. Alessia Cara (Official Audio)

Allen Stone releases his APART today via ATO Records, his new album that reimagines some of his most beloved songs to-date, stripping each lavishly arranged track back to the very essence of its creation. He also shares his duet with pop sensation Alessia Cara, “Bed I Made.” The track is one that Cara has been covering since as early as 2013 and notes, “‘Bed I Made’ has been one of my favorite songs since the moment I heard Allen do a live rendition of it while surfing the internet. It’s still the first song I play when I pick up a new guitar. I’m so incredibly honored to be on this new version with him. It feels super full circle for me ‘cause this tune and his music mean so much to me!”
