H.C. McEntire - Dovetail (Official Lyric Video)

H.C. McEntire Announces New Album Every Acre Releasing January 27 Via Merge Records

New Single “Dovetail” Out Today

Debut Single “Soft Crook” Praised By BrooklynVegan, Stereogum, The Boot And More

H.C. McEntire announces her new album, Every Acre, will be released on January 27 via Merge Records. Co-produced by McEntire, Missy Thangs and Luke Norton, Every Acre features nine poignant new songs, including two tracks with backing vocals provided by S.G. Goodman and Amy Ray. Along with the announcement, McEntire shares “Dovetail,” the new single that imagistically depicts various women and their various gifts, their various traumas.

Watch Video here

“‘Dovetail’ began as a jangly, four-on-the-floor country demo I roughly recorded at home,” McEntire explains of the song’s inception. “In the studio, the band and I leaned into the twang and outlaw attitude, recorded it, and moved on to work on other songs. But something kept calling us back to reimagine this song, to look at it from a different angle. One night after a long day of tracking, Luke started playing the ‘Dovetail’ chord progression on piano, but much more slowly. Daniel jumped behind the drums and played a simple halftime beat while I stood next to the piano and sang out into the room. We quickly recorded about a minute of the experiment onto a cell phone and went to bed. The next morning, we referenced the recording and tracked a full-band version of the song in that style—essentially, it took the form of a ballad.”

“This ‘classic’ arrangement offered space for a more nuanced vocal delivery; the slower pace allowed vocal lines to stretch and stand tall with emotion. The less-is-more approach created a vulnerability that felt right and also applied intention—to clearly speak, suspend, and spill out the narrative. Throughout verses, I posed the personalities of various women in juxtaposition—a way to both celebrate differences and individuation, as well as acknowledge the complexities of being in relation with a range of traumas, including my own. The pre-chorus and chorus lyrics nod to a problematic dynamic that can occur when presumptions are made about an Artist solely based on the social consumption and/or interpretations of their Art—romanticism versus reality.”

Raised in the Blue Ridge foothills of rural Appalachia before earning her B.F.A. in Creative Writing, H.C. McEntire delivers deeply reflective country storytelling that straddles the line between music and poetry. With lilting melodies and lush harmonies, Every Acre explores the acres of our physical and emotional homes. She grapples with themes of grief, loss and links to land and loved ones with an unwavering honesty, as existential concepts of claiming land, claiming self, and being claimed by ancestry and heritage permeate the hauntingly beautiful landscape of this poignant collection of songs. The striking debut single “Soft Crook” offers an unfiltered reflection of navigating depression, garnering early attention from Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, The Boot, The Bluegrass Situation, No Depression and more.

H.C. McEntire first established a reputation for her raw, soulful voice as frontwoman of Mount Moriah and later as a backup singer in Angel Olsen’s band, before striking out on her own with her debut solo album LIONHEART in 2018. That release, along with 2020’s follow-up Eno Axis, garnered widespread acclaim from press including Aquarium Drunkard, BrooklynVegan, UNCUT, UPROXX, Stereogum and more. Pitchfork praised her “searing voice and imagistic songwriting,” and Flood declared, “McEntire’s vocals have topsoil grit while being soaring and formidable.”

Joe Reilly - Breathing - Official Video

Joe Reilly; Environmental Singer, Songwriter and Educator

Joe Reilly is a wonderful indigenous singer, songwriter, social worker, and environmental educator from Michigan. Joe Reilly writes songs that are gifted, poetic and touch deep into the heart of compassion. His music is a mix of styles from hip-hop, blues, gospel, world rhythm and traditional American Indian styles.

Joe Reilly is very engaging with his audience whether it is a big or small show and consistently has something meaningful and educational to say. I add Joe Reilly to my list of amazing environmental songwriters in the likes of Douglas Wood and Bill Brennan (a.k.a. “Billy B.”).  Joe Reilly who is younger, I am sure will carry the environmental songwriters torch well into the future with honor.

PALAYE ROYALE - Line It Up feat. LP (Official Music Video)

PALAYE ROYALE’S HIGHLY-ANTICIPATED NEW ALBUM
FEVER DREAM OUT NOW

Palaye Royale’s highly-anticipated new album Fever Dream is out today via Sumerian Records. Made in collaboration with Grammy-nominated producer Chris Greatti (YUNGBLUD, WILLOW), the 13-track set came to life over the course of a year, with the band working in deliberate seclusion and taking abundant time to sculpt each lavishly orchestrated track. The resulting set is their boldest and most visionary body of work to date.

Alongside the album, the band is releasing a video for the song “Line It Up,” feat. LP. The reflective ballad expresses the band’s desire to deviate from suburban life. Legendary singer-songwriter LP lends her unmatched vocals to the song, creating powerful harmonies that drive home the track’s emotional and emphatic feel. The accompanying video, directed by Ivy Tellin, intercuts footage from their recent North American headline tour with scenes shot with LP at the famous Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA. Watch the video here.

About the collaboration, LP says, “I connected to this song right away. Palaye write with such emotion and I feel like I’ve lived this song too. All the bleak feelings coming together that ultimately make you wanna live forever or die tomorrow. Raw shit.” Palaye Royale elaborates on that, stating, “It’s such an honor to have such an epic human/musician be on the track so organically. We know how beautiful the world can and will be regardless of the darkness.”

Palaye Royale have been teasing out glimpses of Fever Dream throughout the last several months, including new single Lifeless Stars,” Alternative Radio hit Broken,” and the majestic title track Fever Dream,” a throat-shredding epic that fully embodies the transcendent spirit that’s earned the band a cult-like following through the years. Other sneak peaks include the confessional Paranoid,” the darkly addictive Punching Bag,” and the undeniably infectious No Love In LA.”

Their fourth full-length album, Fever Dream emerged from a much-needed break in the chaos, with the trio returning to their roots and composing most of the album on piano, resulting in a body of work that is equal parts ecstatic head rush and in-depth meditation on the state of the human psyche. Palaye Royale explains, “Making this record felt like getting back to when we first fell in love with music.” They continue, “This record is very much about self-belief and self-empowerment, and overcoming all the obstacles that life throws at you. It’s the first time we’ve really taken a hopeful approach in our music.”

With unparalleled swagger, the Las Vegas-bred brothers Remington Leith (vocals), Sebastian Danzig (guitar) and Emerson Barrett (drums) have endlessly delivered an electrifying live show, one that frequently finds Remington hanging from the rafters. The trio is at the tail end of their North American headline run with Mod Sun, rounding out a busy year on the road where the band brought their adrenaline-fueled rock-n-roll circus to their biggest headline shows to date. They began the year with an expansive North American tour with Yungblud, followed by a sold-out headline tour across the UK and Europe, where they packed venues like the Roundhouse in London and an arena in the Czech Republic before hitting the European summer festival circuit. Their current headline run was bookended with a raucous set at the When We Were Young Festival in Las Vegas. They will play their final U.S. show of the year at the Palladium in Los Angeles on November 6.

Equal parts brit-pop, glam rock and art-punk, Palaye Royale has amassed over half a billion streams throughout their career and earned a legion of cult-like fans with their fast-paced dirty rock’n’ roll. First landing in Los Angeles as teenagers, the brothers worked their way up through the ruthless L.A. rock scene going from playing basement shows while living out of their car to headlining arenas around the world. And whether they’re taking the stage at major festivals like Reading and Leeds, Download and Pinkpop or playing to sold-out crowds in such far-flung locales as Amsterdam, Prague and Mexico City, the band’s most crucial ambition is to deepen their rarefied connection with their beloved fanbase, lovingly dubbed the Soldiers of the Royal Council.

Ruthie Foster - Feels Like Freedom (Official Audio)

Ruthie Foster Shares Triumphant New Single
“Feels Like Freedom”

Forthcoming Album Healing Time Out November 18
via Blue Corn Music

GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter Ruthie Foster has shared her triumphant new single “Feels Like Freedom,” from her forthcoming ninth studio album Healing Time, out November 18 via Blue Corn Music. Backed by a soulful choir, the gospel-influenced track soars with Foster’s powerful voice as she celebrates a spiritual breakthrough. Healing Time is available for pre-order.

“I fell hard for the song,” shares Foster when speaking about “Feels Like Freedom,” originally sung by Joanna Jones. “It said everything about what I wanted to do with this album. It exactly captures the feeling of rising up from a place where you felt stuck. A lot has gone on in the last several years, and for some people it felt as if the world was falling apart. This song says to me, ‘No, we got you.’”

“Feels Like Freedom” follows the effervescent “Soul Searching,” which has garnered praise from press including The Alternate Root, Jam Band News and Rock and Blues Muse who said, “As always with Ruthie Foster, all you need to do is push ‘Play’ and get out of her way. She will put your pieces back together.” Foster’s forthcoming record Healing Time finds her pushing her boundaries as a singer and songwriter more than ever before in her 25-year-career – creating a truly live-sounding atmosphere with the help of her band, who sound refreshingly loose and lived-in throughout this 12-song collection.

On Healing Time, Foster enlisted previous collaborators like Gary Nicholson (Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal) and Grace Pettis to pitch in as well as every member of her band. Sonically, her band also played a large role in recreating the timeless sound that she was drawn to after spending time with her vinyl collection. Collaborating with powerhouse producers Mark Howard (Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams) and Dan Barrett, who also worked on Foster’s Joy Comes Back, these new songs coalesced at Adrian Quesada’s (Black Pumas) famed Electric Deluxe studio in Austin, Texas. Along with several members of the Black Pumas, Barrett brought in a collection of Austin’s finest backing musicians like Glenn Fukunaga (The Chicks, Shawn Colvin).

The aptly titled Healing Time is not only a reference to the trials many have faced over the last several years but it’s also a musical balm for Foster’s listeners. It’s safe to say that everyone has been in need of some healing during recent times, and the veteran artist’s latest provides a guide for how to move through the world with equal parts compassion and resolve.

Ruthie Foster is currently on tour including an album release show at Austin’s Paramount Theatre on November 19 where she will be honored with a star on the sidewalk of the historic venue, becoming only the sixth artist to do so and joining icons including Lyle Lovett and Delbert McClinton.
